I just left my company who had their contract with T mobile and I was given the handset to keep by T mobile. When I contacted them to unlock it, they wanted £15 which is cheaper than your service BUT it would take 28 days to get the code so paying the extra £4 with you was well worth it! I bought my Blackberry Curve yesterday, brand spanking new on T-mobile and wanted to unlock it as I am on O2.
